National Photography Month

May 9, 2022

May is National Photography Month.

In 1987, Congress recognized the role of photography and deemed May National Photography month. Many photography associations, organizations,  groups, and photographers use the month of May to host activities, sharpen skills, educate and more.

There are many ways to celebrate National Photography Month. One way to celebrate is to exist in photos! What does that mean? It means that you should be in the photo of that special moment. I know - you want to lose 20 lbs, you don't take good photos, you have a weird smile, you got a bad hair cut and on and on and on. Trust me, I know. I personally don't like be in pictures either! But sometimes, I do it!

Being in the moment and in the photo is really important especially when it comes to portraits with your family. While I photography weddings throughout the year, my passion project is a session called Forever Young. The point of these sessions is to capture beautiful portraits of our parent(s) or grandparent(s). Having these portraits is great not only for our parents or grandparents but for us and future generations.

I have also been documenting my friends children as they grow up. My friend's son is going to be senior this fall and I have been taking his photo every year since he was about six! Each fall, we take photos to document him as he grows and this year, I encouraged my friend and her husband to be in a photo with him. They hadn't had a family photo since their son was a little guy.

She's going to yell at me when she reads this but she was super hesitant to have her photograph taken - why? All the excuses we always give - especially the infamous "I need to lose weight".

And during a photo session for the 3rd birthday milestone, I had Mom and Dad jump in for a picture. They both said "oh we aren't dressed for photos…" I got them in there - we need to document our lives together! Guess, what, it's cute and in the moment. They will love this years down the road!

Ladies - I get it! I really do but you are beautiful! Get in those photos, document your families milestones and your life together. How is going to feel when you look back through your albums, phones, online galleries, to find that you have no photos of yourself to share with your kids, grandkids, friends, etc.  Get in the photos - you are beautiful and amazing!!!

Ok, so we are all going to get in the photos now, right!? :)

Baby, steps! Start getting in those photos with your kids, your siblings, your family, and your friends. Just do it! You will thank me later (hopefully!).

As a photographer, I encourage everyone to be in the photo and document the special moments of life! I promise to do it more myself as well! (Behind the scenes photo of me and Sean Lara courtesy of Kristina Rusch.)
